This year, even with the move, RCE is showing it's true colors.....Red, White, Blue and of course ORANGE! The music teacher, Karen Donathen, had a vision after watching the Darrin Goforth funeral to celebrate the officers of the law during our annual Red Ribbon Spirit Rally with the Rummel Creek students.

The design started in Karen's head, but quickly moved to student creativity and envolvment. Students wrote songs, performed them, and created videos. A committee made up of students and faculty members planned the Spirit Rally. Ethan Manry, fifth grade student, designed the invitation and Ross Stewart, fifth grade student, began putting together video clips and coming up with ideas. Girl Scout troops offered to do things as well.
We are still housed in the Transition Campus on the parking lot of Westchester Academy. We're in the countdown months to moving into our new building back at 625 Brittmoore. What a change is taking place on Brittmore.
Here are some photos from the first day of school. We are up to 718 students...quite a few more this year. Lots of new smiling faces and new parents to show around. We are so excited this year!
2015-16 is off to a GREAT start!

It's still hard to believe that we are down to the last two weeks in the current RCE building. Below are some more thoughts and photos of some of our "last" activities.

In April we had our Bluebonnet Celebrations for students reading books from the Bluebonnet Award List. This year for the give aways, I cleaned out drawers of sketches by illustrators and authors that had visited Rummel Creek over the years. The kids had so much fun picking out their posters from the stacks I had saved. I also found my box of buttons from conferences in the past. Students had fun picking through the boxes and finding just the right button....glad to find new homes for these mementos...the new library will be mostly glass, so no posters hanging around!

As the students rummaged through piles of posters, I thought back to all of the fun authors and illustrators who have visited RCE over the past 12 years. Lots of great memories and learning. I even found a few posters from years before the current library..and photos of the original library at RCE.

And still another last. Our last visiting author in this school building shared with us in May. The authors (Katie Clark and Sarah Wynne) of the River Royals entertained the students in the KIVA all day long as we followed the history of the Mississippi River and learned about the states along the river. It was good learning for the students, and teachers were given some packing time. PreK and Kinder students listened carefully to all of the states that we traveled through as we tubed down the Mississippi River.

Although the new campus will have a KIVA, we will miss this one...it's perfect for all of our large group activities....great for Author Visits...everyone can see....Our last Author Visit in the current RCE...great memories of writers and illustrators that shared their stories with us...

Although it's not a last, the library is looking pretty sad...the books that filled the shelves have been packed and shipped out to the transition campus or long term storage. Technology is beginning to be packed and sent over as well. Our days are numbered in the current RCE building. Such memories in these walls! The number of students that have passed through the halls from PreK - fifth grade and on to bigger and better things. Looking forward to the new building, but remembering the illustrious past and the special students that have passed through the doors of this Rummel Creek building. (Wondering what the future will be!)

Oh yes...in the middle of the packing...we had book fair...our last book fair in this building....see the silver carts before we set it up in the "barren" library.

And still more photos of the packing going on...it's 25 years of "stuff" for me to evaluate and 51 years of books a memorabilia...hard to decide what needs to be kept and what needs to go. It's hard to believe that the current library was built in 2001 and it's will be gone in just a few weeks.

She was born on June 23, 1934 in Iraan, Texas. Shirley graduated from Odessa high School in 1952 and from the university of Texas in 1956, magna cum laude, with a B. A. degree in the Plan Two program. Shirley completed her Master's degree from Cornell University on a Ford Foundation Fellowship in 1957. On June 1, 1957, Shirley married her college sweetheart, Hulen Hale.
Shirley taught first grade for four years and became the the youngest educator to serve as an elementary school principal in the history of SBISD.
During Shirley's 43 year career, she served as president of the Texas elementary Principals' Association, president of the South Central Association of Elementary School Principals and president of the National Association of Elementary School Principals. Among her many honors, Shirley was also name Distinguished Principal of the Year in 1983.
In 1996, during a tragedy in her late adult life, she found a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Shirley leaves a legacy of students, teachers and parents that she touched through her 38 years at Rummel Creek. How we will miss Hurricane Shirley!

On Monday, February 3rd, a gathering of her fellow educators, parents and past students joined together in the Shirley Lincoln Library at Rummel Creek to celebrate her life and share precious memories of this fine woman who moved at a fast pace and never met a problem she couldn't tackle one way or another.
Bonnie Williford Meine shared stories of the early days of Rummel Creek and the strength that this school was built upon. It was a wonderful gathering of old friends just before the Rummel Creek school as we know it goes down in preparation for a new building. How perfect that Shirley was able to attend our 50th anniversary celebration last spring!
Rummel Creek as one former teacher put is "a utopia" - an unbelievable place to work and even better place to learn. Through the Shirley stories we learned that Shirley asked for what she wanted, no matter who it was - she even asked the superintendent to get her a sandwich because she was working late. That legacy has continued! Rummel Creek is a very special place.

We have to remember that it isn't Rummel Creek that is going away...just this building. But...these halls have so many memories to share.
The last few weeks...
.....the Last Book Fair in the current library, and possibly the last book fair as we know it at RCE?!? Over the time at RCE we moved from a totally Table Top Book Fair that covered the ENTIRE library (the old one), to one that is in cases, yet covers most of the library ...Thinking now...will we have a Book Fair in the new building? Will we have a Book Fair in the transition campus? Need to think about the purpose of the Book Fair - to get books into the hands of students...but how many students now access books through e-readers? Do we need to move to an electronic Book Fair...should it be more of a celebration of reading? Need to evaluate why we do a book fair...what is the purpose. We've had a book fair at RCE for more than 40 years. It is one of the most well attended activities at the school. In the "old library" there were many nights and days that you could not move in the library. My first year at RCE (1990) I was not prepared for the attendance. Even with two cashiers (from the company), we could not keep up and the line was over an hour waiting and we only took cash or check. Times have changed...now we have Mom volunteer cashiers, we take credit cards and try to have three or more registers open at any one time to keep the line moving. Book Fair...it is something to consider for the new building.

Another last - Book Character Parade. I can't remember when the parade started...but it's been here for more than 15 years. It used to be during Children's Book Week. But somewhere in the last few years...Children's Book Week has disappeared ...but the parade continues...just after Halloween (keep your costume out for another week.) This year the weather was beautiful and the costumes were great. Such a fun tradition...something to look forward to...A last in this RCE Building....
Oh these memories!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8208448111039229746.post-11760977661855834652013-10-15T21:46:00.001-05:002013-10-15T21:46:20.413-05:00The reality BeginsOctober has been the month to really get into weeding. About 1000 books have been removed from the shelves...still 4000 to go! It's so hard to let go of the books from the 60's so many memories! But reality is....the students today will not pick up those monotone "ugly" books of the 60's (the ones I read over and over). When I first started teaching (back in 1980) I tried to read those special books that I loved in Fourth Grade..I realized that the books that I adored have no interest to the students today - even way back in 1980. One of my favorite books was the Five Little Peppers and How they Grew. My fourth grade teacher (Mrs. Lednicky) shared the book as a read aloud...and then I must have read it over and over. I found that book to read to my fourth graders. I made it one chapter before i realized that it was NOT going to be a good selection. Just as television shows, movies, and music reflect on our society - so do books. Those few classics that are truly timeless are hard to find and hard to motivate students to read. So....today we weed the "golden oldies" and move on to modern and "pretty"...and even electronic. Rummel Creek may be 50...but our library collection will be much more current!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8208448111039229746.post-70359664582947740282013-09-08T11:58:00.002-05:002013-09-08T11:58:20.739-05:00It's only just begun!I know that it's 9 months away....the packing and moving that is...but only in the first week of school are all of the books on the shelf and in some kind of orderly order! So...the past two weeks, as students came to the Library Learning Commons for orientation....they marked the hardback books they want to see taken to the transition campus. This way every child at RCE has a voice in the books being taken to the transition library. It was most enlightening for me to watch the books selected by the students as most took this job very seriously. A few surprises - military books were some of the first to be tagged by the intermediate boys, followed by books on optical illusions! Primary students quickly picked the books that their teachers had shared last year in author studies...you can definitely see a pattern. Other surprises were the biographies and science books selected...I was glad to see they selected somethings that were not in the curriculum.

This year I am focused on e-books, that will add dramatically the number of books we will have at the transition campus...and...they are available to the students 24/7 when they forget about a "book report" that's due. So many students at RCE have e-readers of some sort, I'm hoping the e-books take off this year...I also hope to have enough of a collection that the students will want to check out those that are available.

This year will be a year of changes in more than one way. The idea of the Library Learning Commons will change as the year moves on and we move to the transition school and then on to the new building. CHANGE.....

Here are some photos of the students "dotting" the books to be taken to the transition library....
The first week of school has come and gone. On the first day of school, Rummel Creek opened as it has for 51 years to smiling faces of students, teachers, and parents. There were new faces, there were familiar faces, there were some faces that were excited, and others confused. The Rummel Creek student population has changed over the pat 24 years.....when I arrived there was only 420 students - now we have nearly 700. In 1990 several classrooms were only special needs classrooms, now we're nearly all grade levels with only a few special programs on the campus. What a difference in the community as well...lots of new faces and new families. Welcome to Rummel Creek!

On the first day of school, the parents and children lined up in front of the school waiting patiently for the doors to open. The students were excited to see their teachers and their friends. The first day as well as the rest of the week went rather smooth....except for one little bitty hiccup - air conditioning! And you know how hot Houston can be in August! But the students didn't let a little bit of heat keep them from doing their job.

It's been a great first week of school. It's also been a sad week...last first day of school in this building. It's going to be a lot of lasts this year!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8208448111039229746.post-41140677085480009662013-08-03T16:12:00.002-05:002013-09-08T11:58:53.860-05:00Entering year 51....It's hard to believe that last year we spent the year researching the history of Rummel Creek. We had the big 5-0 celebration and visited with all kinds of former teachers, parents and students...and now...after a short summer its time to go BACK TO SCHOOL.

This year we won't be celebrating 50 years, we will be looking forward to the next 50 years. This year we finish the plans for the new building and end the year packing up for the transition campus for the following 18 months. This year we will be cherishing memories and looking to the future.

It's hard to think of the Rummel Creek building actually coming down. It's been in the community for 50 years in the present state...yes...we've added classrooms, a gym and a fine arts wing in the last 15 years. And after a flood we had quite a bit of remodeling. But the building has generally stayed the same. In June 2014, Rummel Creek as we know it will be torn down to allow a new and beautiful building to be built and carry the next generation of students into the future. Wow...what a year we will have!

For me especially, this will be a difficult year...this year marks 24 years that I have been at Rummel Creek in the library - although in many ways...it seems like just yesterday I walked in the door as a new parent and new staff member. Just after my first year, we implemented a computer circulation system. With the help of parents and students, we weeded the collection, attached barcodes and tried to correct mistakes in the catalog. About 15 years after that, the bond issue funded a new library. Again, with the help of parents and students, we weeded and boxed the collection (it was stored on the stage for 9 months!) waiting for the new and improved library - and yes...it was new and improved - nearly tripled the size of the library - and finally all of the books fit on the shelves. Just a few years later - a flood and roof leak helped to weed the library yet again and another remodel followed - so we packed the books up for a summer, stored them in the cafeteria and came back to new carpet and an updated library. Now, this time - another big job of weeding and packing up the library in two ways - a small library to go to the transition campus and a larger part of the collection to be placed into storage for 18 months.

When I look back over the last 23 years, a lot has changed at Rummel Creek (the concrete playground equipment, the tiny library with just a few stand alone computers, and NO gym - the kids had a t-shack for rainy days!); but a lot hasn't changed (the PTA is still strong and supportive, the teachers are willing a ready to try anything that comes along, the students want to do their best and the community supports the school). No matter where or what building - Rummel Creek will still be Rummel Creek. I am looking forward to this year....yes...there will be tears...yes...there will be many "lasts", but...there is a future to look forward to....something that will be bigger and better and.......
If it is January then we must be doing something to thank the SBISD Board of Trustees! After years of videos, we are trying something different - students writing poetry. Yesterday I worked with a group of second grade students. They did an outstanding job. As we shared the writing, a big "AHA" hit me. Not only could this writing be a gift for the school board, but also a great piece to share for our 50th! The students are sharing what RCE means to them. The poems have been most enlightening as to what means the most to the students at RCE. Sharing this writing lesson has changed my vision for another project needed for the PTA. I'm so glad our students have ideas and help shape the way we do things at RCE.
They are doing 50 random acts of kindness to fill others' buckets. As a school, we have had several big bucket filling activities. One of our activities was sponsored by the K-SHAC Team and the Student Council. We collected warm clothes, shoes, gloves and hats for students at our sister school. We collected more than 300 items in just over three weeks. Our sister school (Sherwood Elementary) was so excited to receive the warm clothing before the Christmas holidays. Today, we delivered 10 boxes of food, paper goods, cleaning supplies and fresh fruit to our custodial, cafeteria and crossing guard staff. We were able to do this because our parents and students collected Turkey Bucks back in November. We were able to fill the buckets of 10 families. We also participated in the "Giving Tree" for some of our families. Parents and students were able to select names and items that the child wanted for Christmas. Our giving tree was very successful. It is very important to help the students at Rummel Creek learn to give back to their community. Rummel Creek students - we're so proud of you doing good for your community. What a great way to celebrate 50 wonderful years!
I have been at Rummel Creek for 23 years. Every year except for the first year we have had a program to motivate students to read books in the fall. The program is to help establish the habit of reading for 15 minutes every night. For PreK and Kinder their parents can read to them. In the upper primary grades, students are expected to read their own books. Students keep a log of the books and simple awards are given thoughout the six weeks of the program. Students who make it through to the very end are given a celebration in the library and a book is placed in their honor in the Library Learning Commons. Over the years students have come back years later to find the books that have been placed in their honor in the library. At first, I didn't keep a record. But now, I have a list of every book and every child so that we can go back and find the books that were placed in their honor in the library. Over the past 22 years, hundreds of books have been placed in the RCE Library Learning Commons in honor of students participating in the Primary Reading Program. Today we had Smore's for our them "Read SMore Books!" We also made Christmas Ornaments from books found in the 1962 Rummel Creek Library. Sad to destroy the books, but had fun creating from history! Fun day in the RCE Library Learning Commons today!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8208448111039229746.post-80858212147625647062012-11-14T15:01:00.001-06:002012-11-14T15:01:44.561-06:00History of Grants

Rummel Creek has had a long history of working to acquire grants to help add to the resources for the students. Years ago, RCE received the RJR Nabisco 21st Century Grant. This brought in technology and problem based learning. In the past 15 years Rummel Creek has been blessed with funding from the Spring Branch Education Foundation, Fuel Up to Play, Texas School Health and this year Donor's Choose. Thank you Chevron and Donor's Choose for placing all kinds of materials in the hands of the students at RCE!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8208448111039229746.post-73159882482101839402012-11-07T13:33:00.001-06:002012-11-07T13:33:59.525-06:00Favorite TeachersA few weeks back, a former Rummel Creek teacher taught a lesson to my children's choir. She taught at Rummel Creek in the 60's - 80's. Bonnie Williford Meine is still a dynamic teacher. I enjoyed listening to her share the lesson with these fourth and fifth graders and thought "Wow...if she is this good now...what kind of pistol was she in the classroom at Rummel Creek?" Rummel Creek has had a history of outstanding dedicated teachers. If I started making a list it would be very LONG! Two of Rummel Creek's teachers went on to be the SBISD teacher of the year - Beneva Langios and Diane Higginbotham. We've had more that made it to the final three. Strong teachers means strong students and strong scores. Rummel Creek has had them all.
We'd love to hear some stories about your favorite teachers or staff members. We've also had some outstanding music teachers and health fitness teachers walk through the doors at Rummel Creek. And who could forget the custodial staff (JOE) and the cafeteria manager (Cathy Pierson). Post your stories.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8208448111039229746.post-55185408979539291062012-11-07T08:46:00.001-06:002012-11-07T13:16:42.716-06:00Favorite MemoriesI've been at Rummel Creek for 23 years. Almost half of the life of Rummel Creek. How the school has changed in the 23 years I have been here. One of the first things you see as a big change is the library. In 1990 when I first arrived at RCE, the library was a dark place with shelves high along the walls. Now the library is open and bright with large windows. Computers, iPads, Mini dells, digital cameras and a studio fill the space. Students can read in rocking chairs, couches or on a bean bag chair. Classrooms are also different. Activeboards have been put in over the white boards that were put in over the green chalkboards. Learning stations are now filled with technology instead of records and books. Enjoy these photos from the past - the First Science Lab was created in a t-building out back. For a sink, Terry McKetta rigged up a large water cooler for water. The big black science tables came from a nearby High School upgrading it's labs. Now our lab has running water, a stovetop, oven and STORAGE!
Monday morning was a lovely morning in the Rummel Creek Library. We were most fortunate to have all four principals together for a photo. Not too many schools can get all of the former principals together in one shot....what a wonderful experience. We took time to take photos in and around the school. Teachers took time to visit with each of the principals as well. As we thumbed through scrapbooks, stories were shared and memories jogged. I can't wait to see what memories are reflected through this blog! Principals from 1962 - current include Shirley Hale Lincoln, Mary McMillian, Bill Burger and Nancy Harn. It was a lovely morning in the Rummel Creek Library.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8208448111039229746.post-68772766649744384632012-09-12T08:55:00.001-05:002012-09-12T08:55:25.767-05:00Past StudentsTell your story of your time at Rummel Creek Elementary.
